Startups, Songs and Web Series | The Truth About Popularity
All startup founders understand the concept of product-market-fit (PMF). If you’ve a product that market wants, your startup will grow. If not, you’ve to keep iterating until you find ‘the thing’ that people want. Otherwise, your startup will wither away.
The same is true for songs. A lot of people believe that English songs are being pushed by West and are ‘destroying’ their culture. The truth is that people listen to what they enjoy the most. Whether it's "Gangnam Style" or K-Pop music, people will sing along if they enjoy it, regardless of whether they understand the language.
You can’t force a song or web series down people’s throats, just like you can’t force startups.
Why do you Uber and don’t go back to calling taxis over phone? Why do you use Airbnb? Why did you binge-watch Money Heist? It’s because ‘YOU LIKED THESE THINGS’. Sure, marketing helps and makes you try stuff the first time. But you use it again and again because you like it.
This principle is true for so many things and answers questions such as :
“Why is Italian food popular and not Indian?”
”Why do kids spend time on Tiktok instead of studying?”
”Why do people listen to hip-hop music and not religious sermons?”
So the next time someone tells you it’s all a conspiracy theory, you know better :)
